2018 Château La Mission Haut-Brion Pessac-Léognan
The sister estate to first growth Château Haut-Brion, La Mission Haut-Brion is widely considered a sixth Premier Grand Cru in all but name. Owned by Domaine Clarence Dillon, its 21-hectare vineyard in Pessac-Léognan produces some of the most singular, age-worthy wines in Bordeaux. 2018 is a magnificent, generous vintage on the Left Bank.
Grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
Terroir: 21 hectares in Pessac-Léognan on the great gravel terraces, with sandy-gravelly topsoil over clay subsoil. A mild oceanic climate moderated by the proximity of Bordeaux.
Vinification & ageing: Hand-harvested and rigorously sorted, fermented in temperature-controlled vats, then aged for around 22 months in 100% new French oak barrels.
COLOUR: Deep, opaque garnet.
NOSE: Complex bouquet of blackcurrant, dark cherry, smoke, tobacco, graphite and warm spice.
PALATE: Dense, voluptuous and tightly woven, with silky tannins and a long, perfumed finish.
FOOD PAIRING: Pair with truffle dishes, roast game, aged beef and the finest hard cheeses. Outstanding cellaring potential of 25+ years. Serve at 16-18°C.
