2015 Château Ménâté Sauternes
Château Ménâté is a Sauternes producer crafting classic Bordeaux sweet wines from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Like all great Sauternes, the wine is made from grapes affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which concentrates sugars, glycerol and aromatics in the fruit. 2015 is widely regarded as one of the finest Sauternes vintages in recent memory.
Grape varieties: Sémillon-led blend with Sauvignon Blanc, often with a small proportion of Muscadelle.
Terroir: The Sauternes appellation south-east of Bordeaux, where the cool Ciron tributary meets the warmer Garonne, creating the autumn mists that promote noble rot. Gravelly and clay-limestone soils.
Harvest: Hand-harvested in successive passes (tries) through the vineyard to select only the noble-rotted grapes.
Vinification & ageing: Slow fermentation in barrel, then aged in French oak for added complexity.
COLOUR: Bright golden yellow.
NOSE: Rich, expressive nose of acacia honey, candied citrus, apricot and subtle minerality.
PALATE: Powerful yet beautifully balanced, with sweet honeyed fruit lifted by fresh acidity and a long, lingering finish.
FOOD PAIRING: A classic match for foie gras, blue cheeses such as Roquefort, fruit-based desserts and crème brûlée. Serve at 8-10°C.
