2018 Gérard Bertrand 'An 560' Côtes du Roussillon Villages Tautavel
From Gérard Bertrand's Heritage range, 'An 560' takes its name from the 560,000-year-old Tautavel man, whose ancient remains were discovered in caves close to these vineyards. The cuvée pays homage to one of Europe's oldest archaeological sites and to the timeless terroir that surrounds it.
Grape varieties: Approximately 50% Grenache, 30% Carignan and 20% Syrah.
Terroir: A natural amphitheatre in the Côtes du Roussillon Villages Tautavel cru, with limestone-clay and schist soils. Warm Mediterranean climate tempered by the Tramontane wind.
Harvest: Hand-harvested at optimal ripeness for each variety.
Ageing: Around one third of the wine is aged in French oak barrels, the remainder in stainless steel, before final blending.
COLOUR: Deep, dense ruby.
NOSE: Rich, with black fruit, liquorice, truffle, garrigue and a hint of black olive.
PALATE: Full-bodied and velvety, with ripe tannins balanced by lifted fruit and a long, savoury finish.
FOOD PAIRING: Magnificent with grilled lamb, game, beef stews and aged cheeses. Serve at 16-18°C.
