2018 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron Pauillac 2ème Cru Classé
Château Pichon-Longueville Baron is one of Pauillac's iconic Second Growths, classified in 1855 and a near neighbour of Château Latour. Owned by AXA Millésimes since 1987, the estate has been steadily restored to the very top tier of Bordeaux, producing some of the Médoc's most muscular yet elegant wines.
Grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend (around 60%) with Merlot and a small proportion of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Terroir: 73 hectares of deep Günzian gravel soils on the famous gravel plateau of Pauillac, just a stone's throw from Château Latour.
Vinification & ageing: Hand-harvested grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled vats, with malolactic fermentation in barrel. Aged for around 18-20 months in French oak barrels (a high proportion new).
COLOUR: Deep, opaque purple.
NOSE: Powerful bouquet of blackcurrant, dark cherry, cedar, graphite and tobacco leaf.
PALATE: Full-bodied and concentrated, with firm, polished tannins, layered fruit and a long, savoury finish.
FOOD PAIRING: A wine for special occasions - pair with rib of beef, rack of lamb, game and well-aged hard cheeses. Cellar with confidence for 15-25 years. Serve at 16-18°C.
