2018 Château Angélus Saint-Émilion
Château Angélus, formerly Premier Grand Cru Classé A of Saint-Émilion, has been in the Boüard de Laforest family for over a century. Its 23.4-hectare vineyard produces deeply concentrated wines under a long-standing collaboration with the late Michel Rolland. 2018 was a celebrated, generous Bordeaux vintage.
Grape varieties: Approximately 51% Merlot and 47% Cabernet Franc, with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Terroir: 23.4 hectares on the south-facing slopes around Saint-Émilion, with mid-slope sandy clay-limestone over limestone subsoil.
Vinification & ageing: Plot-by-plot fermentation in small wooden vats; malolactic in barrel. Aged around 22 months in French oak barrels (a high proportion new).
COLOUR: Deep, opaque purple.
NOSE: Powerful, complex nose of black cherry, blackberry, mocha, cedar, violet and warm spice.
PALATE: Full-bodied and richly layered, with polished tannins, ripe fruit and a long, persistent finish.
FOOD PAIRING: Pair with rack of lamb, prime rib, truffle dishes and aged hard cheeses. Outstanding cellaring potential of 20-30 years. Serve at 16-18°C.
