2018 Château Cos d'Estournel Saint-Estèphe 2ème Cru Classé
From Saint-Estèphe's pagoda-topped Second Growth, Cos d'Estournel produces some of the most distinctive wines in the Médoc, sitting on deep gravel soils across a stream from Château Lafite. The 2018 vintage, particularly successful in the northern Médoc, brought rich, ripe fruit alongside the estate's hallmark structure.
Grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Terroir: 70 hectares of gravelly soils on the boundary of Saint-Estèphe and Pauillac, with clay subsoils that retain water in warm vintages.
Vinification & ageing: Plot-by-plot fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. Malolactic in barrel. Aged 18-22 months in French oak with a high proportion of new oak.
COLOUR: Deep, dense purple.
NOSE: Powerful bouquet of blackcurrant, dark cherry, liquorice, graphite, cedar and exotic spice.
PALATE: Full-bodied and richly textured, with polished tannins, deep fruit and a long, savoury finish.
FOOD PAIRING: Cellar for a decade or more; pair with prime rib, venison, game pie and the finest aged cheeses. Serve at 16-18°C.
