2021 Rumelia Mavrud Reserva

Rumelia Wine Cellar was established in 2006 in Panagyurishte, on the Upper Thracian Plain - in the historical Thracia region considered the birthplace of Bulgarian winemaking. Mavrud is the dark-skinned, indigenous flagship of southern Bulgaria, particularly associated with the Asenovgrad area, and the Reserva sees extended oak ageing for added depth.

Grape variety: 100% Mavrud - an ancient indigenous Bulgarian red grape, late-ripening and naturally tannic.

Terroir: The Upper Thracian Plain near Panagyurishte, with clay-limestone and alluvial soils. The warm continental climate, moderated by the surrounding mountain ranges, suits Mavrud's late ripening.

Vinification & ageing: Fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel with extended maceration to extract the variety's intense colour and tannin, then aged for an extended period in oak barrels.

COLOUR: Deep ruby with purple highlights.

NOSE: Rich, complex nose of black forest fruit, black cherry, smoke, fine leather and integrated oak spice.

PALATE: Concentrated and balanced, with ripe tannins, lifted acidity and a long, savoury finish.

FOOD PAIRING: A traditional match for slow-cooked lamb, grilled red meats, game and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16-18°C.

We deliver in Sofia and across Bulgaria. Pickup available at the bar at 33 Sveti Kliment Ohridski Street during opening hours.
