2019 Château Cos d'Estournel Saint-Estèphe 2ème Cru Classé
Founded in 1811 and classified Second Growth in 1855, Cos d'Estournel is the iconic estate of Saint-Estèphe, instantly recognisable for its pagoda-topped chai overlooking the vineyard of Lafite. 2019 is widely hailed as a magnificent Bordeaux vintage, combining ripeness with freshness and producing wines of remarkable purity and balance.
Grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, with smaller proportions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Terroir: 91 hectares in Saint-Estèphe on deep gravel and clay soils, sitting just across a stream from Château Lafite. Oceanic climate.
Vinification & ageing: Plot-by-plot fermentation in temperature-controlled vats; malolactic fermentation in barrel. Aged 18-22 months in French oak barrels with a significant proportion of new oak.
COLOUR: Inky purple.
NOSE: Powerful, refined bouquet of blackcurrant, dark cherry, liquorice, cedar, graphite and exotic spice.
PALATE: Full-bodied and seamless, with cashmere tannins, deep fruit concentration and a remarkably long finish.
FOOD PAIRING: Cellar over a decade, then pair with prime rib, venison, truffle dishes and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16-18°C.
