2015 Dragomir 'Pitos' Reserva
Dragomir Estate, in the heart of Bulgaria's Thracian Valley near Plovdiv, was founded by oenologists Natalia Gadjeva and Konstantin Stoev. The 'Pitos' Reserva is one of the estate's flagship reds - a deeply structured blend dominated by the Bulgarian Rubin variety, aged in new French oak for added concentration and finesse.
Grape varieties: Bulgarian Rubin (a crossing of Nebbiolo and Syrah)-led blend, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Terroir: The Thracian Valley near Plovdiv, on alluvial and clay-limestone soils. Warm continental climate moderated by the surrounding ranges.
Vinification & ageing: Hand-harvested, fermented separately by variety, then aged for around 24 months in French oak barrels with a high proportion of new oak. Further refined in bottle before release.
COLOUR: Dense brick-red garnet.
NOSE: Complex nose of black cherry, plum, dried herbs, leather, dark chocolate and warm wood spice.
PALATE: Full-bodied and concentrated, with polished tannins, layered fruit and a long, savoury finish.
FOOD PAIRING: Pair with slow-cooked lamb, grilled red meats, game and aged hard cheeses. Serve at 16-18°C.
